Note We don't disclose per core Intel® Turbo Boost Technology frequencies for processors.

Intel Turbo Boost Technology is a way to automatically run the processor core faster than the marked frequency. The processor must be working in the power, temperature, and specification limits of the thermal design power (TDP). This results in increased performance of both single and multithreaded applications. There is no need to install any software or application to support Intel® Turbo Boost Technology.

Click on the topic for details:

How many versions of Intel® Turbo Boost Technology are there?

Intel Turbo Boost Technology has two versions. Intel Turbo Boost Technology was originally introduced in late 2008 with the Intel® Core™ i7-9xx Processor Series. Intel Turbo Boost Technology v2.0 was introduced in 2011 with the Intel® Core™ i5-2xxx and i7-2xxx Desktop Processors. Version 2.0 operates in the same fashion as the first implementation and was optimized for the new microarchitecture introduced at the time.

Which processor families support Intel® Turbo Boost Technology?
  • Intel® Core™ i7 Mobile and Desktop Processors
  • Intel® Core™ i5 Mobile and Desktop Processors
  • Intel® Core™ X-series Processors
Intel® Turbo Boost Technology supports which operating systems?

Intel Turbo Boost Technology is a processor technology, and it should work with any operating system.

How do check to see if my Intel® processor supports Intel® Turbo Boost Technology?
  • Identify your Intel processor.
  • Go to ark.intel.com (Product Specification Page).
  • Enter the processor number in the search box, located top right.
  • On the processor page, and under Performance,  look for Max Turbo Frequency value
What factors influence Intel® Turbo Boost Technology operation?

The operation is dependent on headroom available in one or more cores. The amount of time the system spends in turbo boost mode depends on workload, environment, and platform design.

How can I enable or disable Intel® Turbo Boost Technology?

Intel Turbo Boost Technology is enabled by default on supported processors. You can disable or enable the technology with a switch in the BIOS. No other user-controllable settings to change Intel Turbo Boost Technology operation are available. Once enabled, Intel Turbo Boost Technology works automatically under operating system control.

Does my motherboard support Intel® Turbo Boost Technology?

Intel Turbo Boost Technology is a processor technology. Make sure you have an Intel Turbo Boost Technology-supported processor. Desktop board vendors normally enable Intel Turbo Boost Technology by default. You can typically enable or disable it through a switch in the desktop board BIOS. Refer to your motherboard vendor for BIOS options to enable and disable Intel Turbo Boost Technology.

Is turbo frequency the same for all active cores in the processor?

Yes.

Can I enable or disable Intel® Turbo Boost Technology by core?

Intel Turbo Boost Technology is a processor technology and can't be enabled or disabled by core. If one core is active, the technology is enabled.

Can I specify the maximum Intel® Turbo Boost Technology frequency?

The maximum frequency for the processor function can't be specified. The maximum frequency is automatic and dependent on working conditions.

Will Intel® Turbo Boost Technology cause system to get too hot?

Intel® Turbo Boost Technology won't cause the system to get too hot as the core performance increases in power, temperature, and specification limits of the thermal design power (TDP). Sometimes, when Intel® Turbo Boost Technology is running, the system fan may run at a faster speed, which is normal when boosting the processor frequency. Ensure the processor is working in the power, temperature, and specification limits of the thermal design power (TDP).

How can I tell if Intel® Turbo Boost Technology is working? Is there a tool to show if Intel® Turbo Boost is running in my system?

There are several Intel-released tools or third-party tools that will help you see if the processor frequency is running at Turbo Boost frequency.  You can also use the task manager under Performance tab.  The base frequency is listed on the top and the current frequency is listed under Speed.

What is the difference between Intel® Turbo Boost Technology and Intel® Turbo Boost Technology Monitor?

Intel Turbo Boost Technology is an Intel® processor technology. Intel Turbo Boost Technology Monitor is a tool that shows Intel Turbo Boost Technology in action.

How can I see the highest Turbo Boost frequency for my processor?

If you set the number of cores to one in the BIOS and run the Intel® Processor Identification Utility, it shows the highest Turbo Boost frequency. Make sure you reset the switch in the BIOS to reactivate all cores.

How important is system integration and system design in regard to Intel® Turbo Boost Technology?

Intel Turbo Boost Technology runs when the processor is working in the power, temperature, and specification limits of thermal design power (TDP). Good system integration and thermal design are crucial to get the benefits of Intel Turbo Boost Technology.
